PokerStars Review: Games, Rake and Rewards Explained | Reelaudit
PokerStars Review: Still the Best Room for Recreational Players?
PokerStars has the widest game menu, free tables and the most tournaments in licensed markets. Its rewards have lost value for grinders, but casual players get the better deal.

Best forRecreational and improving players who want the most games and action
Poker is the one casino product where the other players matter more than the house. That is why a poker room's traffic, game menu and rake decide more than any welcome banner. PokerStars still leads on the first two, and mostly lags on the third. We read its pages, then checked independent rake data, because a poker room is only as good as what it costs you per hand.
Poker involves skill, but the rake is a built-in cost and variance is brutal. It is entertainment, never a salary.
A menu nobody else matches
The games page lists Texas Hold'em variants such as 6+ Hold'em, Showtime Hold'em and Fusion, Omaha from four cards to six, Courchevel, Seven Card Stud, Razz, Five Card Draw, 2-7 Triple Draw, Badugi, and mixed games including HORSE and the 8-Game Mix. Formats include cash games, Spin and Go, multi-table tournaments and All-In Poker. The page claims "hundreds of ring game tables running right now" and "hundreds of tournaments every week".
The PokerStars games page: Hold'em, Omaha, Stud, draw and mixed formats.
Those figures are the site's own, but they match what independent reviewers keep saying: if you want a game outside Hold'em, PokerStars is where the tables will actually run.
A room that teaches
Newcomers get more help here than anywhere else we looked. The free page promises play-money tables, free chips on a new account and a top-up when you run out, plus daily freerolls that sometimes pay real prizes. There is also a Poker School, rules pages and a dictionary.
Free tables use play money only, according to PokerStars.
The site's own Hold'em guide walks through the rules and hand rankings, which suits anyone who has only played with friends.
PokerStars' Hold'em guide covers rules and hands for beginners.
What the rake costs
The weak point is price. According to a DeucesCracked rake comparison, PokerStars takes about 5% of cash game pots with caps from $0.50 at the lowest stakes to $5 at NL200 and above. That is slightly kinder than a flat $3 cap at micro stakes and notably harsher at higher ones. Check the Poker Table Rake page on the site for the figures that apply in your market.
Stars Rewards replaced the Supernova scheme with randomised chests. The same source estimates effective rakeback around 15 to 25 percent for most players, and rates it among the weakest for high-volume grinders. For a casual player who plays a few hours a week, the chests feel generous. For someone grinding thousands of hands, there is better value at other rooms.
Rake is the price of your seat. A 5% pot rake means the table collectively pays the room even when everyone plays perfectly.
Regulated markets differ
Rewards, offers and even game selection depend on where you live. Some European markets and Ontario run separate pools, and US state versions have their own rules. Read the local terms rather than assuming the global description applies to you.
The casino sidebar
The homepage pushes a casino welcome offer. The offer page headlines "up to $100", but its terms refer to a maximum balance credited of $200, a mismatch we would want fixed. It adds 100 spins worth $0.10 each, unlocked by wagering the deposit and bonus, with a $4,000 cap on spin winnings and a 7-day expiry. Treat this as a casino add-on, not a poker bonus.
The casino first-deposit offer page, which advertises a Casino Instant Bonus of up to $100 plus 100 free spins.
How a casual player should use it
Start at the free tables, move to the smallest real-money stakes only when the rules feel automatic, and keep a separate poker budget that never touches rent money. Freerolls and low-buy-in tournaments cap your downside, which makes them the best way to meet real opponents. Cash games reward patience, but fatigue costs more than rake does, so quit when your focus slips.
Avoid the trap of judging the room by one hot week. Variance can hide a losing strategy for thousands of hands, and the rewards chests can make a bad month feel better than it was. Track your results honestly, including rake paid.
Safer play
Poker invites long sessions, so use deposit limits and reality checks, and set a stop-loss before you sit. If play stops being fun, seek help from your local support line.
Verdict
PokerStars keeps its rating because it still has the players, the games and the teaching tools. It loses ground on rake and on a rewards scheme built for casual play rather than volume. Pick it if you are learning or play for fun. Look at GGPoker, ACR or a state-licensed room if volume rakeback matters more to you.

Our verdict
PokerStars has the most complete poker menu in licensed markets, with free tables, a poker school and a huge tournament schedule that suits learners. Rake sits around 5% with caps, and the chest-based Stars Rewards pay less than the old VIP scheme, so serious grinders can do better elsewhere. For casual players it is the safe choice.
